Initiated by a few Colombo Plan scholars at the turn of the millennium, The MACC Scholarships take the Colombo Plan a step further by providing a two-way exchange of scholars between Malaysia and Australia. This `reverse Colombo Plan’ was set up in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the Colombo Plan in 2001, and was officially launched the following year.

Spearheaded by The Malaysian Australian Alumni Council(MAAC), the MAAC Scholarships Program is supported by four partners, namely The Malaysian-Australian Foundation (The MAF), the Australian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur, the Australian Department of Education, Science and Training, through Australian Education International (AEI) and Australia Malaysia Cultural Foundation (AMF). In October 2003, IDP Education Australia Ltd in Malaysia joined as the Program Administrator. The overall program is overseen by the MACC Scholarships Committee, which comprises representatives from all five partners of the program. To date, the Malaysia Australia Colombo Plan Commemoration (MACC) Scholarships had benefited more than 250 students from Malaysia and Australia.
