Do What You Love and Love What You Do

love what you do

It’s better to have a short life that is full of what you like doing than a long life spent in a miserable way. – Alan Watts

Alan Watts is a truly inspiring man, and while listening to his audiobooks I came about this quote. It spoke to me the most out of everything he had said. My father had always told me to do what I like in the future and that I should get a job I enjoy. Plus apart from my job I should always continue my hobbies of which I have so many. Even though I have always lived by this principle, as I grew older, I started doubting whether this was even possible, until I heard Alan Watt’s audiobook.

Now ascending into adulthood, I have to make decisions which will change my life. I had to choose my A-Level subjects and I’m going to apply to universities soon. And all this while I do not know what to study or what job to have in the future. My passion is to dance and to inspire, and for a while I wanted to be a dancer. However, people were telling me that it is not possible because of the short career I’d have and that I’d started too late. This got me thinking whether doing what I love is even possible and feasible. Would I earn enough money to make a living?

After listening to Alan Watts I realised that it doesn’t matter what I do. I can be successful and earn enough with anything I do – the key is that I believe in myself and believe in my passion. Because in the end, if I have a job which I dislike, I wouldn’t be happy. This results in me not doing the job properly anyway, which would stop me from a promotion or might even get me fired if it were really bad. On the other hand, if I follow my dream, I would put in 100% to get it, because it is what I want. And once I have it, I will keep working well because I love doing it. Therefore, what’s the point of doing something I don’t like?

I don’t just want to base this to working and jobs, because I have only had a couple of small part time jobs. I do know for one thing that I get much, much better grades in school for the subjects I like than the ones I don’t. And that I do better at dance classes than piano classes. And it’s the same principal as I described above – I enjoy it, therefore I am actively involved and I don’t mind studying for it.

I want to be happy and live a fulfilling life. Happiness is the best gift in life, and it is one’s own choice. When you love what you do, you are able to smile all day, have fun and show your passion. You will succeed in one way or another, guaranteed. Then you are happy. When you are happy, you are able to live life easily, with little worries or stress. You are able to love yourself and love others, find amazing friends and the right life partner. When you have people you love around you, do what you love and love what you do and are happy, you can love life and know that you are living a fulfilling life.
