Last week, me and the student-well-being team had an assembly for girls about body image. This was based on a questionnaire we had sent out, and the results we got were saddening.
There are so many people out there, women and men, who simply hate themselves because of the way they look or one physical aspect. They look into the mirror and don’t accept what they see, and can’t live a loving and happy life because of it. It often leads to dieting and eating disorders, or emotional distress. I used to be one of them.
I am taking this chance to tell you that there is absolutely no reason for you to put yourself down because of being too fat, too skinny, too tall or short, too curly hair or a big nose. Whatever it is, you are still a human being, have red blood and therefore you belong to us and to this world.
The media portrays models and women as stick figures, with thigh gaps and flat tummies. Photoshop makes skin glow and perfect and even changes people’s figures. What we are shown is simply unrealistic and therefore our perception of beauty has changed. The food industry doesn’t exactly help either with all the added sugars and fast food. So, we have to take matters in our own hands and change our lives.
The tricky part is that no matter how much you try to change yourself through physical means (like diets), it will rarely have a lasting positive impact on your life. What does, on the other hand is self-acceptance. Once you fully accept and love yourself, it no longer matters how you look like.
The key to being happy and to attracting the life you want is to be self-loving. It means to look into the mirror and tell yourself ‘I love you for who you are and for how you look like’, and truly believe it. Once you are capable of doing so, everything else will fall into place. I know this because it has happened to me. Only once I accepted my body, I was able to lose weight. Only once I accepted myself, I was happy and started living life.
Your body image does not matter. However, if it does matter to you so much, you will see that it will matter to others too. If you judge yourself, others will, too. It’s the principle of life. So, effectively, if you love yourself, so will others, and you will attract the right friends and partners. It is up to you how you want to live life, and whether you get annoyed at your body or fully embrace it.
you cannot change physically, but you can change mentally and therefore be happy and loving anyway.
